More Wings! by Pickleweasel360 More Wings! by Pickleweasel360
Edit: Temporarily replaced with and X

After making the first wing I decided to make another set plus finish the red ones. This was just more practice as I didn't change anything about the pattern. I just worked on how to make the feathers face the same way even though I had to work from a different side. It moved the stitches over on the opposite wing, but that is ok, that is what practice is for.

The white set is for a Pegasus, the red possibly for a Phoenix. After I get the bodies done I will work on another set that will be poseable. Thank you guys for all the suggestions! Taking a different perspective is just what I need sometimes.

PS The right wings look bigger because I tucked the loose yarn under them and if puffed them up. Sorry about that!

These wings are very inspiring *_*

One of these days, I hope I will be able to design some solid looking wings like these!

I love this design. I'm going to be making some angel wings before too long... I will definitely be referencing this design and giving you credit! Wings are difficult, and you have executed them so well! Not too complicated and not too simple- I love the slight variation on feather lengths- I think you got them just right.

Thank you so much! I would LOVE to see what you do with them, especially at the scale you use. My animals are tiny so any add-ons have to be tiny too. I plan on making an Owl or Eagle that is full sized so I can use the design I see in my head. The folding ability was what I really wanted most out of the design. I've seen 'at rest' wings but they were never what I was looking for. I wanted something versatile. O.O omg I just thought of something you could test them out for. Castiel! He is already made and you can use his size as a reference on how big to make your wings! That was the first thing that popped into my head. I still have to comment about your new stop motion character. I faved him so I could remember. XD I just read the comic you had me cracking up so bad haha!

I will keep an eye out for if/when you do a large-scale bird- you could do such incredible things with a full-sized bird! You could improve on actual birds! I don't have Castiel anymore- he lives with my friend. Or else I would be trying that! I'm so pleased that the comics are funny! I never know if it is or if I'm just crazy.

I know on your other picture of the single wing you mentioned wiring each individual feather... is that what you did in order to keep them straight? I made some little wings with picot feathers on a rooster amigurumi and they curled all over the place. (I didn't really mind, but I was thinking if I ever made something that I wanted to look more realistic, I would have a dire situation lol!)

I thought I might have to before I made them but the way I ended up designing them there is only a wire in the base. Eventually though I will have to figure out how to make each feather poseable too. The reason these are so straight is because I go back and stitch along the edges of each feather. It doesn't make them perfect but it sure helps with the curling. I can't stand when they curl up lol

I think it is a whip stitch lol except instead of joining 2 pieces you stitch along the edge of the chain you made. Dont pull it too tight or it will just make the curling worse. Loosely weaving in and out will give it more bulk I suppose. It wont let it curl as bad and it hold the shape better than it did.

DAAAAAAMN, these look amazing! I hear you on being so picky about wings - it's fabulous to see crochet wings that, well, resemble actual birds' wings.

Thank you so much! I've wanted to make wings ever since I got interested in crochet. I have looked and looked for good wing designs but I could never find any that I liked. It was one of my epic challenges I thought I would never be able to do, but I managed to work out. :) There is still a lot to do but I am so close!!!

Funny thing is, first thing I thought of when I saw them is Assassin's Creed because of the colors. xD

I feel like there's some moral code that says you should be sharing this technique, or at least selling the pattern for the wings. They're far too brilliant.
