Dark Unicorn by Pickleweasel360 Dark Unicorn by Pickleweasel360
Here he is finally, fire and all. I voted against the wings, it seemed to distracting from the flames. I also skipped the feet flames, it just seemed to much. Next time I will probably make all the red parts here yellow instead. Since the flames are yellow and orange the red tends to stick out but not like I had intended. Can't crochet a horn small enough to work, so I used a trimmed down pipe cleaner. Love this yarn, it's wispy and wild like fire, except it was a pain to dye it that way. I could only find white, and at $8 a roll, I wasn't about to buy more that one.

Anyway, this originally came from the "Elements" theme in our group :iconcrafting-on-camera: but then I got an idea to make something else for it. I had intended on making a Gryphon for this :iconcrartisancrafts: Mythology contest, but instead I decided to submit this guy. I actually finished the Gryphon, its just hard to pose it in the way I saw in my head, so I will post it later. Not the typical picture that comes to mind when you think of Mythology, but I looked at the other submissions and they are breaking free of their boundaries, so can I. :)

Yes, I know I've posed almost every horse I've made in this pose, but there is just something so awesome about this. Standing around is boring, haha. June, always having something to say, tells me this is my new Satan Rapidash. She's already threatening to kidnap him and let him live with 'Fever' www.pickleweasel360.deviantart…

***EDIT: You can get the basic horse pattern now on my Etsy page. Foals can also be bought on the same listing: www.etsy.com/listing/162311822… It doesn't include how to make the horn or the flame hair, but you could customize it after you make the basic pattern.

I like to get my eyes from here [link] Sadly they don't have small colored eyes, but you seem do be taking care of that problem pretty well on your own

I get mine from [link] They have colored ones with the black pupil, but I wish I could find solid clear ones so I could paint my own design. Painting them solid like this works when its small, but on bigger eyes the paint practically slides right off.

even with acrylic paints? I would try coating it with modge podge first.

Hmm, I will have to try that! I actually have some of that.

I still want the clear ones because of the pupils. If I paint a pupil on the outside it will look funny at different angles. If I painted it on the back of a clear one, it would look better at almost any angle.

Thank you :) The biggest problem I have with the black yarn is that every piece of lint, yarn fiber, or dust bunny seems seek out and attach themselves to it. Ugh. Good thing I have some sticky tape.

Wow, he is very striking indeed. Love the red accents (did you paint those eyes or buy red ones?), and the horn was well done as well (pipecleaners around me tend to shed...a lot).
Great work, and good luck!

Thank you! I did paint them, I wish I could find solid colored ones in this small of a size. Even clear ones so I could paint the back of them, but unfortunately I don't think they make them this tiny. The pipecleaners is actually the same kind as I used for 'Fever' for his antlers. They were extra fluffy so I trimmed them. The tip did shed lol

Thank you. :3 There are some neat entries, but I think I might have a shot lol

Ah! Goodness I haven't commented on your beautiful works in so long but my oh my, you just keep on improving don't you?

The hair looks like it's been styled differently from some of your other creatures. It gives a better flame effect, especially on the tail. The whole thing is beautifully done!

Very nice! The yarn you used for the main and the tail work very well for that fiery look. It has just the right texture and natural movement for it. The read is not too bad for the hooves and the horn but I can see where a yellow or orange may feel to be a better fit. Nice job its always amazing to see how well they stand!
